The Newlun Family session was one of the most difficult secrets to keep! The portrait session took place in July at Liberty Lane Stables in Elkhorn, WI and I was dying to share the beautiful images right away. But Jessica wanted to surprise her daughter, Molly, with the fine art portraits of two of her horses for Christmas so we worked very hard to keep quiet, despite Jessica almost spilling the beans a few times leading up to the holidays!
Toby, or Sir Tobson Featherbottoms, as he is known in the show ring, is an 8-year old Saddlebred who does hunter/jumper. Jessica describes him as the “Walmart greeter” and “the most loving, friendly sensitive horse. He loves everyone and everything. He loves to touch you and be close. He has some past trauma and we dealt with that as it came out. He trusts with all his heart and will give his all every time you ride.“
During our time together, Toby wasn’t quite sure what the fuss was with the camera, but he was easily swayed with treats to show off his stunning palomino paint coat and golden dapples. Jessica’s husband, Josh, remarked on how he’s never been that white, nor will he ever be again!
Next up was Faith, a 15-year-old Bashkir Curly Cross, rescued in 2019 by the Newluns after having retired from barrel racing. Just like the barrel racers and their free runners in the hit show, Yellowstone, Faith is a sassy girl with a touch of affection. Jessica said Faith has the ability to read her riders well, and also politely tell you when she’s had enough. The family’s favourite memory of Faith is bringing her home from the rescue and watching her grow into one of the best horses they’ve ever met.
When we created this magical photography session this past July, no one had any idea that Faith would cross the rainbow bridge just four months later – before they would give the portraits to their daughter, Molly. These fine art equine portraits became a tribute to Faith, preserving her memory and giving her spirit a home. It was a pleasure and privilege to work with the Newlun Family and their beautiful horses.
