Poppy is a spicy Thoroughbred mare, and I mean that in the best way. She was fairly new to Norwegian Hill Farm, where I board my two horses, so I had the chance to get to know her well, and her big personality is a huge part of why I love these portraits so much.
A Thoroughbred with a Big Personality
Registered as In Flanders Fields, Poppy is a drama queen with an endless supply of facial expressions. She loves pets and butt rubs, and she does dressage and cross-country with her owner, Michaela.
Their story started with a bang. On Michaela’s very first try ride, Poppy bucked her off, and as Michaela puts it, “The moment she bucked me off, I knew she was mine.” She bought her that same day. Michaela always says that Poppy is humbling, but so rewarding, and it is obvious how much she loves her.

Dark Bay on Black at Norwegian Hill Farm
We photographed Poppy at Norwegian Hill Farm in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. Her dark bay coat melts into the black background, and her big, beautiful blaze stands out like a brushstroke. Every expression she is known for comes through, from her bright, alert eye to the little bit of attitude that makes her Poppy.
Michaela, thank you for giving Poppy a session all of her own. You can also see Michaela’s family portraits from that same evening. She has been such a fun mare to know around the farm!
